The Data Internship program at Surgo encompasses several aspects of the data science pipeline. Surgo’s data sources primarily include proprietary web and mobile assets with a large total user base and near real-time collection frequency.
Incoming data is also sourced from a wide variety of digital subject areas, including web traffic data, geolocation data, consumer interest data and other forms of digital data exhaust. Interns at Surgo will have the opportunity to work alongside both data analysts and data engineers and help both teams uncover value in the company’s data sources. On the data analysis side, interns are encouraged to contribute to the development of new ways to statistically scrutinize various datasets and provide analysts with support for several proprietary tools and analyses. On the data engineering side, interns will help ensure data quality by writing test cases and scripts to thoroughly check incoming data for errors and by helping to design internal storage solutions for various types of data.
Analysis: work alongside data scientists to help develop Surgo’s data products, understand and contribute to the analytical output of several tools ranging from simple aggregation to more complicated analysis like regression analysis, classification, and advanced statistics, write test cases and provide troubleshooting support for proprietary tools (R and Python), provide ad-hoc analysis for client questions, work with business intelligence tools (Tableau, PowerBI, etc) to create on-the-fly exploratory dashboards
Engineering: help ensure data quality by working directly with data engineers and helping to debug database and storage issues, contribute to the design of data storage methods for various types of incoming datasets, monitor incoming datasets for errors and help track down robust solutions
Required: pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, computer science or other technical, engineering field; genuine interest in data analysis and/or engineering; experience with a coding language, preferably R or Python; strong Excel skills; strong communication skills
Preferred: experience with SQL or other database experience; experience with web and mobile analytics platforms (Google Analytics, Firebase, etc); rising senior
